Is AMD Going Out Of Business?

I understand that the PC market is slowing and Intel (INTC) is gaining market share over AMD; however, I don’t think AMD is going out of business or anything and it shouldn’t be priced as if it is going out of business. As of last quarter, AMD had $1.58 billion in cash and $2 billion in debt. Considering the company’s market share of $2.48 billion, the company has plenty of cash, in addition to a lot of debt. As long as the company continues to generate positive cash flow, it shouldn’t have trouble paying its debt as 75% of its debt is long term. The company’s high inventories and declining pricing power will continue to be points of concern for the investors.

Missouri couple who won $20 million in lawsuit going bankrupt

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — A southwest Missouri couple who won a $20 million verdict from the makers of a butter flavoring used at a popcorn plant have filed for bankruptcy. The Joplin Globe reports Eric and Cassandra Peoples of Carthage also are being forced to sell the home they built for $3.9 million. The couple filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy last month in federal court in Springfield. Their petition lists the current value of their residence at $700,000 and personal property assets of nearly $33,000. They claim liabilities of more than $611,000. The couple won a $20 million verdict in 2004 against International Flavors and Fragrances Inc., and Bush Boake Allen Inc. They claimed Eric Peoples suffered an irreversible lung disease because of the flavoring used at a popcorn plant where he worked. —— Information from: The Joplin Globe

Economist’s View: ‘Is Medicare Really Going Bankrupt? Definitely Not’

Medicare ‘bankruptcy’: CNN gets it right, by Trudy Lieberman: Hooray for CNN.com, for fact checking the often-heard claim of Medicare’s “impending” bankruptcy. CNN’s contribution sets a high bar… The “bankruptcy” language comes up a lot. … But is Medicare really going bankrupt? Definitely not, says CNN. The network is correct, and the point is crucial. How did CNN pull away from the fact-checking pack on this one? … First, CNN reported, as CJR has urged news outlets to do, that only one part of Medicare is in potential trouble—the Hospital Trust Fund, which is financed by payroll taxes. The other parts of Medicare, including Part B, which finances doctor visits, lab tests, and outpatient services, “are adequately financed for now,” Medicare trustees have said. … CNN pushed further and asked a logical question that most reporters writing about Medicare have missed. When the magic date for “bankruptcy” arrives—2024 according to the Dems, or 2016 if the ACA disappears in a Romney presidency—would Medicare really disappear? Jonathan Oberlander, a health policy expert at the University of North Carolina, told CNN that … “Medicare is not going bankrupt. Medicare would still have most of the necessary funds to pay those expenses and other parts of the program would be unaffected. Medicare won’t go bankrupt in the literal sense in 2016 or 2024 or 2064—or ever.” The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which runs the Medicare program, said this year that even in 2024 the Medicare hospital trust fund could still pay 87 percent of its estimated expenditures, and noted that, “in practice, Congress has never allowed a Medicare trust fund to exhaust its assets.” … That’s not to say that Medicare’s cost explosion is not a problem. How to control cost—not just for Medicare but for al the rest of the healthcare system, too—is a central issue that the press needs to clarify. …

Paul Ryan to seniors: Medicare 'going bankrupt,' competition is answer

Two main republican planks seem to be that all the so called entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare are going bankrupt and that the answer is to privatize them and provide vouchers for such benefits,, and that only tax cuts can save the economy. It sounds contradictory, and it is. Neither Social Security nor Medicare are going bankrupt although Medicare has more financial issues than SS. All that has to be done when SS funds run low is to increase the lifetime cap of $$110,000 (I believe), and no cuts in benefits or raises in age eligibillity are required. I am not surre what the fix or fixes are for Medicare, but I know they exist, and in any case, it is NOT going bankrupt. The R&R plan would probably cut costs for the govt. , and increase them for the individuals ad provide windfalls for corporations and the financial industry–these are the real constituents of a R&R administration. .

Why are States going bankrupt?

You will note in Block 11 of the accident report form that I weigh 135 lbs. Due to my surprise at being jerked off the ground so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and forgot to let go of the rope. Needless to say, I proceeded at a rapid rate up the side of the building. In the vicinity of the third floor, I met the barrel, which was now proceeding downward at an equally impressive speed. This explained the fractured skull, minor abrasions and the broken collar bone, as listed in section 3 of the accident report form. Slowed only slightly, I continued my rapid ascent, not stopping until the fingers of my right hand were two knuckles deep into the pulley.

Pecozbill: So…. the town is going bankrupt …. so whose fault is it?

But in the next breath, when it was pointed out that repeal of a State Law providing for automatic public payroll raises would solve the problem – the same Cuomo (yeah that Cuomo dynasty) allowed as that is a “political non-starter’ because of union contributions to the State legislature…..
